What We Can Learn from Great Conversationalists

You know when you walk away from someone and think, “Boy that was an interesting person.” Nine times out of 10 it was because they got YOU to do the talking. All great conversationalists are naturally curious people and they are very good at asking interesting questions. Questions that get us to open up, share and honestly, feel good about ourselves. This isn’t the conversationalist being disingenuous. If anything it’s self-interested. They think, “I already know all about myself, what can I learn from this person?” You can use the same “listen first” approach to make the process of speechwriting so much easier. Here’s how:

1.) Identify 3-5 people who are reflective of the kinds of people you’re talking to.

2.) Ask them what THEY want to know about the topic you’re presenting — what questions do they have? What do they wish they understood? What is most interesting TO THEM about this topic.

3.) Find a way to answer those questions — at least some of them in your talk. We are often so deep into a topic that we don’t know what other people don’t know!

So find out! I guarantee you it will make your talk way more interesting to the people listening.
