Why Healthcare Clients Choose Us
We’ve been working in the field since 2008, so we understand that writing for healthcare is different. As a healthcare writer, you must be skilled in:
- Interviewing physicians and researchers as part of your discovery process
- Using plain language to explain scientific terms to a patient audience
- Writing with empathy to establish a connection with readers
- Ensuring the accuracy of what you write (after all, lives may be at stake)
Our team of senior writers checks all of these boxes and more. We’re experienced in writing clinical and educational content for consumers and physicians as well as development materials for current and prospective donors.

FAQs
How long has The Hired Pens been in business?
Partners Dan O’Sullivan and Anna Goldsmith co-founded The Hired Pens in 2001.
How long have you been working in healthcare?
We started working with our first healthcare client in 2008. We’ve since served a mix of community hospitals, academic medical centers and large health systems.
Are you comfortable interacting with clinical stakeholders and other subject matter experts?
Yes. We always do our research upfront to ensure we have a working knowledge of the subject matter. And keeping in mind how tight their schedules can be, we strive to conduct efficient interviews with physicians and researchers.
Can you translate complex medical information into patient-friendly language?
Yes. When conducting interviews, we stress the importance of explaining concepts in ways that patients can understand. In writing the content, we focus on doing the same, leveraging readability tools along with our personal perspectives as patients.
Do you offer search engine optimization (SEO) copywriting services for healthcare clients?
Yes. We excel in writing SEO content for hospitals and health systems that meets technical objectives while still sounding human.
Where are your healthcare clients located?
We work with multiple hospitals and health systems in Greater Boston but also have healthcare clients throughout the northeastern United States and beyond.
What do you charge for your services?
It all depends on the details of the project. In determining pricing, we account for two main variables: research (including interviews) and writing (including revisions). Please contact us if you have a potential project in mind. Once we understand the scope of work, we’ll be happy to provide a quote.

Applause
“Taking technical medical jargon and distilling it down to create accessible, flowing, consumer-patient-friendly Web copy that shapes the market differentiators of a 200-year old academic medical center isn’t a particularly easy job. Dan and his team at The Hired Pens excel at being both scientific medical content strategists and consumer health writers. … Do they give honorary medical degrees for this sorta stuff?”
